كيف نعرف حقيقة الواقع؟ السؤال الذي يدور حوله كتاب "سحر الواقع" للبريطاني ريتشارد دوكنز عالم بيولوجيا التطور والذي ترجمت اعماله إلى أكثر من لغة لأهميتها.
يثير الكتاب تساؤلات عديدة من بينها هل الواقع هو فقط الشيء الذي ندركه بحواسنا ولكن ماذا عن مجرة بعيدة، بالغة البعد إلى حد تتعذر معنا رؤيتها بالعين المجردة؟ ماذا عن نوع من البكتيريا، صغيرة الحجم لا يمكن رؤيتها بلا ميكروسكوب قوي؟ وماذا عن أشياء أخرى لا تستطيع عيوننا اكتشافها، أو تلك التي حدثت في الأزمان الغابرة. ماذا يقول العلم عن تطور العقل البشري الذي صنع هذه الحضارة العظيمة. يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه: "فيما يلي من هذا الكتاب، أريد أن أبين لك أن العالم الحقيقي، طبقاً للفهم العلمي، يمتلك سحراً نابعاً من داخله، هذا الذي أسميه السحر الشاعري: الجمال الملهم (بكسر الهاء) الذي هو كله سحر متزايد نظراً لأنه سحر حقيقي ونستطيع أن نفهم كيفية عمله. فبجانب الجمال والسحر الحقيقيين للعالم الواقعي، إن التعاويذ الخارقة والخدع المؤداة في العروض تبدو رخيصة ومبتذلة بالمقارنة".
وبكلام آخر، يتجاوز هذا الكتاب عالم المعجزات، والسحر، والأساطير إلى الحديث عن الحقيقة الأكثر سحراً وهي العلوم التي جاءت في أعقاب الأساطير ذلك أن الحقيقة أكثر سحراً بالمعنى الأفضل والأكثر إثارة للكلمة من أي أسطورة أو لغز مصنوع أو معجزة. فالعلم سحره النابع منه: إنه "سحر الواقع".
يتألف الكتاب من اثني عشر فصلاً جاءت العناوين الآتية: 1- ما الواقع؟ ما السحر؟ 2- من كان الإنسان الأول؟ 3- لماذا يوجد عدد بالغ الكثرة من الحيوانات المختلفة؟ 4- مم تتكون الأشياء؟ 5- لماذا الليل والنهار، الشتاء والصيف؟ 6- ما الشمس؟ 7- ما قوس قزح؟ 8- متى وكيف بدأ كلَ شيء؟ 9- هل نحن بمفردنا؟ 10- ما الزلزال؟ 11- لماذا تحدث أشياء ضارةً؟ 12- ما المعجزة؟.
