قدم المؤلف لكتابه هذا بمقدمة ومما جاء فيها: "... إنني – وبعد توفيق الله – أدين لهذه الجزيرة بكل أنفاس قلمي المكتنزة بهواء بحرها ونصاعة رمال شطآنها وخفقات "رِيَش" أشرعتها في الصباحات الباكرة والأماسي الشاعرة المعطرة بأريج تبتلات بحارتها الباحثين عن الرزق في الأعماق ودانات سمّارها الضاربة في الوّلَه، وفي حكاياتهم البحرية الممزوجة بآهات عرائسها اللاتي لم يكتمل في عرسهن قمر حين يودعن عرائسهن وعلى شفاههن حرائق قبلات الوداع ولظى اشتعال فراق المحبين حين يتمرد الكحل في عيونهن بوحاً يكسر خجل النظرات العاشقة ولهفة النفوس الظمآنة التي تزداد عطشاً كلما حاولت أن تطفئ ظمأها وتخمد أوار الشوق في جوانها. (...)، في هذا العمل – حاولتُ أن أبتعد عن النهج "القاموسي" أو الأسلوب "المعجمي" الذي قد يبعث في نفس القارئ السأم او الملل وأن ألجأ إلى تلطيف جفاف بعض المعلومات ما استطعت إلى ذلك سبيلاً. ومرة ثانية أزعم أنني قدمت بعض الأشياء التي ستصافح عيون بعض القراء لأول مرة وتمنحهم معلومات يتعرفون عليها لأول مرة أيضاً، وإذا صدق زعمي فإنني سوف أشعر ببعض الرضا وأشعر أن حبري الذي سكبته على الورق لم يذهب سدى وأن ذاكرتي التي نفضتُ عنها بعض التراكمات القديمة قد أتت أكلها بعد أن حان قطافها...".
