يضمّ هذا الكتاب بين دفّتيه أعمال ندوة "تراث بيروت في الحفظ والصَّون"، العنوان يوصّفُ واقع الحال بقدر ما يستشرفُ أفاق المستقبل، وهو يطرح تساؤلاتٍ علميةً محقّة، ولكن الجديدَ والمفيدَ يكمنان في تخصيص المدينة، بإعتبارها الحاضرةَ والبوتقةَ والمصهَر، بكتاب تتكامل فيه الأبحاث والقراءات المتعددة والمتمايزة للشخصية التراثية، فهذه الشخصية تعاني حالياً لَبساً في التعريف، وإختلاطاً في كيفيات التعاطي، وشبهة في الدلالة، وعدمَ وضوحٍ في الوظيفة الفعلية أو تلك المرتجاة.
وفي سعيها لتفسير مختلف الظواهر والأشكال الحضارة الممهدة أو المواكبة لتظهير معالم هذه الشخصية، بحثت ندوتنا في نمطٍ من أنماط التحضّر وشكلٍ من أشكال السلوك البشري، فالبحث عن / في الشخصية التراثية المدينية، ونعني بذلك ملاحظة كيفية ترابط عناصرها، وكيفية إجتماع المؤتلفات والمتناقضات في جوهرها المفرد والمتعدد والمتنوّع في آنٍ.
