يشكل هذا الكتاب دراسة في مخطوطة نادرة بعنوان "مُسيّر التاريخ" وهو من تأليف: أبي القاسم علي بن منجب بن سليمان؛ الشهير بـ ابن الصيرفي المصري وفي تعريف المؤلف، مُسيّر التاريخ: مختصر من التاريخ يُذكر فيه أسماء الخلفاء وكناهم وأنسابهم وأسماء أمهاتهم، ومتى ملك كل واحدٍ منهم وكم ملك، ومتى قُبض وعن كم قُبض، وأسماء كُتّابهم وحُجابهم ونقوش خواتيمهم [خواتمهم] وأسماء ولاة العهود الذين لم يَلُوْا الأمر ومن يجري مجراهم ممن رشح للأمر ولم يبلغه وَذِكرُ من طلب من الطالبين، وما كان من أمورهم.
وهكذا، جمع ابن الصيرفي في كتابه هذا أساطين التاريخ الإسلامي وقد افتتح تاريخه بسيرة عطرة مباركة، ألا وهي سيرة الرسول ، ثم تاريخ الخلفاء، وولايات الملوك والأمراء، ورتّبه على التسلسل من زمن النبي إلى سنة خمسين وخمسمائة، وإلى ما بعد وفاة الوزير طلائع بن رُزَّيْك، وهو لم يقتصر في تاريخه على التراجم، بل ضمّنه أيضاً ذكر بعض ما جرى في عصره وقبله من أمور وأحداث.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب - المخطوطة دأب الدكتور عبد العزيز عبد الرحمن سعد آل سعد إلى الاعتناء به وتحقيقه بالاستناد إلى ما صنفه المؤرخون، وذلك بمقابلة النص بالنصوص التي صنفها المؤرخون السابقون على ابن الصيرفي، مثل المسعودي، والقضاعي، وتاريخ الطبري، والمعارف، وغيرهم، كما عمد إلى مقابلة النص على ما صنفه المؤرخون بعد ابن الصيرفي، مع تخريج الآيات القرآنية وشرح المصطلحات، وإثبات النص حسب القواعد الإملائية الحديثة وغير ذلك مما يتطلبه التحقيق العلمي الرصين، فخرج للقارئ بكتاب نادر في معلوماته، غني بأفكاره؛ مما يحتاجه كل مسلم اليوم.
