الآدمي، الكريم، الرحوم، المعيل، نتذكره الأنيق بلباسه والأديب في مزاحه هي صفات قبضاي بيروت وما زالت صوره تتجسد في أحيائها العتيقة، هو اليوم من أهم رموزها في زمن اختصرت الذاكرة لصور الشخصيات السياسية ولم تعن لهم معاني الرجولة والشجاعة والكرامة.
قبضايات بيروت الذين عرفوا في أواخر العهد العثماني وأوائل الانتداب الفرنسي لم تعرفهم بيروت وحدها، بل عرفتهم بلاد الشام وكانت تعتبرهم السلطنة العثمانية ومن بعدها الانتداب الفرنسي كخارجين عن القانون ورجال عصابات لأنهم كانوا يناصرون المظلومين ويعطفون على الفقراء والمحتاجين.
يقول المؤلف عن كتابه هذا: "يتناول هذا الكتاب بشفافية شخصية القبضايات ومعالم بيروت العتيقة وعائلاتها، فلقد أردتُ أن أبرز صوره الشخصية الشعبية الأسطورية التي أضحت اليوم بلا تراث وبلا رمزية، وأصبحت مختزلة في قصص هزلية لا تشبه مطلقاً ما كانت تتمتع به هذه الشخصية المحببة شعبياً من استقامة وشهامة وشجاعة، وبات هذا المزاج على هذه الشخصية الشعبية هي الأقرب لشخصية فقدت رسالتها الغابرة بمراحل من الزمن الجميل، ولو أن بعض الفنانين حادوا بهذه الشخصية عن صورتها الأصلية وجنحوا بها نحو الكوميديا المسطحة التي تسيء إليها أكثر مما تنصفها أو تدل على محاسنها الفريدة.
