قبل تدريس أولادنا مادة الرياضيات، علينا تعليمهم كيفية فهم الوعي المكاني: الباب مفتوحاً أو مغلقاً، أو السيارة بعيدة أو قريبة، أو كان الكلب يجري خلف القطة، فإن الأولاد يواجهون هذه العلائق المكانية يومياً ويجب توعيتهم إلى نقاط الاختلاف بين هذه الكلمات التي تشير إلى نقاط مكانيّة. يساعد كتاب "الخروج إلى العالم" الأهل في تعليم الأولاد دلالات هذه الكلمات - مثل قريب، بعيد، إلى الأمام، إلى الخلف - ليتمكنوا من توظيفها في تعابيرهم، لذا ينصح هذا الكتاب الأهل في استعمال هذه الكلمات عندما يتحدثون إلى أولادهم ليتعلموها. لأنهم كلما تحدثوا إلى أولادهم أكثر، كلما ازداد فهمهم لها واستيعابهم معانيها؛ ولأن الأولاد يتعلمون عبر السّماع والإنصات. لأجل ذلك جاءت هذه القصة بهدف توضيح فكرة الوعي المكاني ومصطلحاته للأولاد عبر حكاية إنسانية بطلها "جوني" الصغير الذي لم يعد قادراً على السير بسبب حادث سيارة تعرض له، فأصبح يستخدم الكرسي المدولب.. ولكن، صديقنا الصغير لم ييأس ولم يستسلم وكان يذهب بكرسيه إلى مسافةٍ أبعد من المنزل، ويشارك في سباق الماراثون وها هو يقترب من خط النهاية، وتصفق له الجماهير المحتشدة إلى يساره.
