The Egyptian crossing of the Suez canal on October 6, 1973, which launched the fourth Arab-Israeli war, was one of the largest and most remarkable operations in the history of warfare. The architect of the operation was General Saad el-Shazly, then chief of staff of the Egyptian armed forces and one of the most brilliant - and popular - of Egypt's military men.
In these memoirs he describes the planning and execution of the October war; the blunders which followed the impressive initial successes; the clashes between soldiers and politicans; the role of the Soviet Union; and, after the war, the hunt for scapegoats - which culminated in his sacking by President Sadat.
In his book he provides a more detailed picture than has hitherto been available of the war itself, the functioning of the Egyptian war machine, and the decision-making process in Egypt.
