تُدعى الرموز المستخدمة للتعبير عن الأرقام أعداداً. والأعداد نوعان: "أعداد أصلية"؛ وتدل على كمية الأشياء المعدودة، و"أعداد ترتيبية"؛ وتدل على مرتبة المعدود أو موقعه. ومن أجل استيعاب المفهوم الحسابي، وإدراك معنى الأعداد الترتيبية في سياق متسلسل ومتتابع؛ جاء كتاب "الطيران بواسطة البالونات" ليتمكن الأولاد من استخدام الأعداد الترتيبية والأصلية بشكل صحيح، فهم بحاجة أولاً إلى فهم مدلول كلٍّ منها جيداً، بحيث يصبح بإمكانهم استيعاب فكرة أن الهدف من استخدام الأعداد الترتيبية (الأول، الثاني، الثالث) يختلف عن الهدف من استخدام الأعداد الأصلية (واحد، اثنان، ثلاثة). وعبر حكاية مسلية تلامس خيالهم، تنفخ الفتاة البالون الأول ليرتفع، ثم الثاني ليرتفع أيضاً، وعندما تنفخ الثالث يرتفع البيت كله ويطوف في الفضاء. وعندما تقرر العودة تقوم بوخز البالونات ترتيبياً، الأول ثم الثاني فالثالث. وعندما يحط البيت على الأرض تسقط جدرانه أولاً ثم سقفه ثانياً، وتسقط مدخنته ثالثاً وأخيراً. ما يميز الكتاب احتوائه على تدريبات عملية، ترافقها صور ملونة وجذابة تساعد الأولاد على فهم مادة الكتاب وتقرب المعنى إلى أذهانهم، فيجتمع لهم المتعة والفائدة في آن معاً...
