يعاني المصابين بمرض التوحد من الأطفال مشاكل في التفاعل الاجتماعي، والتواصل، والسلوكيات المتكررة، ومشاكل في اللغة والانتباه تعيق قدرتهم على التعلم، ويواجهون صعوبة كبيرة في فهم الكلمات، والتركيز على المهام. في كتابه «تعليم الأطفال المتوحدين» يستخدم الدكتور "جد بايكر" استراتيجيات عديدة لتعليم المهارات الاجتماعية، فضلاً عن استخدام أدوات المساعدة البصرية كالكتب المصورة والرسوم المتحركة، بطريقة توجيهية تعزز مهارات الأداء بطرائق معينة.

لا تشكل قراءة هذا الكتاب بديلاً عن ممارسة المهارات فعلياً. فهو أداة مفيدة للاكتساب الأوّلي للمهارات، ويجب أن تتبعها ممارسة فعلية للمهارة في الحالات المناسبة لها... فالكتاب يشجع على أن يرجع الطالب إليه بشكل مستقل بعد تعلّم المهارة من أجل تعزيز السلوكيات المناسبة، ويمكن للكتاب أن ينتقل مع الولد عبر مختلف البيئات الاجتماعية؛ من المنزل إلى المدرسة، أو إلى المجتمع، وخلال العطلة، ليقوي التعليم ويضاعف الاستقلال. كما يمكن للكتاب أن يساعد الأولاد على تخيل النتائج الإيجابية لتأدية مهارة ما، وكيفية تفكير الناس وشعورهم إزاء سلوكهم.
