ما كان أيّ من أفراد العائلة الصغيرة المؤلفة من الأب والأم وولديهما يتوقع ما سيحصل لدى الانتقال إلى الريف للإقامة في البيت الكبير الذي يقع على الجرف المطلّ على البحر غير أن أموراً لم تكن في الحسبان قلبت حياة المراهقين رأساً على عقب حين أقاما في ذلك البيت، وجعلتهما يخوضان المغامرات الواحدة تلو الأخرى، ويكتشفان أسراراً مخفية نقلتهما إلى عوالم غامضة؛ فما أن أقامت العائلة في ذلك البيت الكبير الذي كان في ما مضى مسكناً لشخص غريب الأطوار حتى بدا الفتى المراهق يسمع أصواتاً غريبة. أصوات أشباح تجول في البيت غير أن الغريب في الأمر هو أنه الشخص الوحيد الذي كان يسمع تلك الأصوات.
تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية حتى يزور فتى يقيم في القرية البعيدة البيت الكبير ليتعرّف إلى الأخوين، ويرحب بهما ويعرض عليهما صداقته. وحينها وعلى ضوء هذا العرض اتخذت حياة الأخوين منحىً مختلفاً فعندما تواجد المراهقون الثلاثة معاً في ذلك البيت الغامض دارت عجلة الحياة بشكل مختلف وخاض المراهقون الثلاثة المغامرة تلو الأخرى، وتمكنوا من حلّ ألغاز متنوعة، كما استطاعوا حلّ شيفرة مكّنتهم من فتح أقفال الباب السري الذي عثروا عليه صدفة، والذي نقلهم عبر سراديب عديدة إلى شاطئ البحر، حيث وجدوا هناك سفينة أسطورية تكاد تكون خيالية سبق لهم أن سمعوا عنها ولكن لم يسبق لأيّ كان رؤيتها فعلاً. وهكذا، حين صعد المراهقون إلى تلك السفينة. بدأت المغامرة الحقيقية.. وربما كانت الأكثر خطورة وحماسة على الإطلاق.
