لاو تسي مفكر صيني كبير، وهو مؤسس المدرسة الفلسفية التي تدعى الطاوية خلال حقبة الربيع والخريف (776-476 ق.ب.م). كتابه المؤلف من خمسة آلاف كلمة والذي يحمل عنوان: (Ching Te Tao) أو (Jing De Dao) أي (كتاب الفضيلة الكلاسيكي أو كتاب لاو تسي) كان له عظيم التأثير على فلاسفة عصره وعلى الأجيال اللاحقة.
يعرض الكتاب «قصة لاو تسي» حياته وتجاربه: شبابه المبكر، وتعلمه عند المعلِّم تشانغ زونغ، ورحلته نحو الجنوب، وعمله كأمين أرشيف الإمبراطورية، ورحلته نحو الغرب وعن الكتابة في ممر هانغو. إضافة إلى تقديم لمحة عن الفترة التي عاش فيها لاو تسي، والتحديات التي واجهها وتغلب عليها. إذ يقدم الكتاب صوراً واقعية عن الظروف الاجتماعية والاقتصادية التي سادت عصر الفيلسوف. فقد هيمنت المنافسات بين النبلاء الإقطاعيين على الحياة السياسية مما تسبب بالكثير من المعاناة بين عامة الشعب. وبالتالي، أدى هذا الوضع إلى دفع الفلاسفة للبحث عن حلول مثالية وتقديمها للحكومات لتنفيذها.
ما يميز هذا الكتاب الذي كُتب كسيرة أدبية هو احتوائه الصور الواقعية الموثقة ومحتواه التاريخي الغني، بحيث يشكّل للقارئ مصدراً للمتعة الأدبية والثقافة التاريخية الصينية في آن معاً. كما أن جميع الشخصيات الرئيسية والأحداث المذكورة في عملية السرد مستقاة من أرض الواقع، أي أنها حقيقية، كما يمكن اعتبار الكتاب دليلاً يرشد إلى فكر لاو تسي ويشير إلى مؤلفاته.
