ربط العديد من الصينيين أسلوب حياتهم بـ «منخفض الكربون» قبل فهم المعنى الحقيقي للمصطلح. أسلوب حياة منخفض الكربون هو موضة بالنسبة للجيل الأصغر، وهو مثالي للجيل الأكبر سناً، وهو موضوع متكرر للمسؤولين على مستوى القاعدة، وطريقة تستطيع الشركات الصينية من خلالها الترويج لمنتجاتها. وبغضّ النظر عن عوامل البيئة العالمية والسياسات الدولية، أصبح مصطلح «منخفض الكربون» مفهوماً واسع النطاق في الصين.
من الواضح أن معرفة الناس بـ «نمط حياة منخفض الكربون» بسيطة ومبهمة ولكنها دقيقة. نمط الحياة منخفض الكربون يشير إلى نمط حياة يقل فيه انبعاث غازات الدفيئة (GHG) في الواقع، "الكربون" هنا أكثر من ثاني أكسيد الكربون (CO2)؛ والميثان (CH4)، وأكسيد النيتروز (N2O)، ومركبات الكربون المشبعة بالهيدروكربونات الفلورية، وسداسي فلوريد الكبريت (SF6) هي أيضاً من بين حدود انبعاثات غازات الدفيئة المذكورة في بروتوكول كيتو الدولي.
في كتابه «نمط حياة منخفض الكربون» يوضح الكاتب فانغ يون تشونغ كيف تتحول الصين إلى مجتمع منخفض الكربون وإن إنشاء دولةٍ صينيةٍ منخفضة الانبعاثات الكربونية هو أمر ممكن. فأجرى مقابلاتٍ، والتقط صوراً، كما استعان بمعلوماتٍ عامة حكومية، ومعلومات أخرى حقيقية من مواطنين عاديين وذُرف من أجلهم - كما يقول – الدموع، إنهم العمال والمزارعين الذين يعيشون تحت خط الفقر ويعملون في ظل ظروفٍ قاسية، بالرغم من عدم رغبتهم في القيام بذلك".
