في أعمال أحمد الزبيدي تمثل الشخصيات مركز السرد، وتقدمها الأحداث مغلفة بالرمز. ولعلَّ هذا انعكاسٌ لطبيعة الأفكار في أعمال الزبيدي، فأعماله الثلاثة المنشورة جميعًا تقوم بشكل أساس على "ثورة ظفار" و"الانقلاب الإنكليزي" وما تلاهما، نابشة في التاريخ العُماني ومثيرة الأسئلة حول ظروف الإنسان في هذه البقعة وما حدث فيها من استعمار وأنظمة حكم وحروب واضطهاد وتمرد ورفض. وعلى النقيض ممَّا قد يحيل إليه التصاق الأفكار بقضية وطنية يكتب الزبيدي بحساسية عالية تجعل حضور كل شيء أساسيًّا، لا وصف أو عوامل ثانوية ممهدة تتوسَّل لغة تتراصُّ في جملها معانٍ جوفاء زائدة. يكاد كل سطر يشترك في صياغة الحدث ودفع سيرورة الشخصيات. سرد ينبغي قراءته بحذر، فكل ما يرد فيه قد يتأنسن فجأةً، وحتى إن بقي كما هو قد يمتلك إمكانياتٍ غير متوقعة أبدًا تخوله الدخول في بنية السرد وصنع أحداثها. وإن بدا الأمر حينًا أنه مجرد صيغ شعرية يأتي فجأة ليداهم أي تصور سابق، أيَّ وتيرة متعارف عليها ويفعل فعله عبر تراكم الإشارات: "قهقه الكولونيل وأكد: هذه محكمة عسكرية... –وأضاف- الإجراءات هنا سريعة وميدانية.. ثم لبس وجه الغضب وتكلف الجد وقال: "لقد حكمت على صديقتك الفراشة بالإعدام..".. "وحكمنا عليك أنت باستبدال رأسك..."... وفيما كان الجنود يحشون بنادقهم ويصوبونها على صديقتي الفراشة كان "عمال البلدية" يعملون على قدم وساق لتفكيك رأسي القديم وتركيب إشارات المرور برأسي الجديد... وعندما دوت طلقات الجنود وسقطت صديقتي الفراشة جثة هامدة.. وبفعل من رأسي الجديد.. ربما.. وربما بفعل خطأ من جهاز الكمبيوتر الذي زود به رأسي الجديد ذهبت وبلت على الجثة الهامدة... ثم حزنت لذلك حزنًا شديدًا حتى إنني لفرط حزني استعرت مدية الكولونيل وقطعت عضوي الذي فعل ذلك..".
