ليست التربية المسرحية نوعاً من أنواع الفنون، كالغناء والرقص والرسم والتمثيل، بل هي ظاهرة تربوية، تعتمد الفن المسرحي كأداة، لتحقيق أهدافها، التربوية أولاً، ثم هي في الدرجة الثانية، ومن خلال التجربة، تحقق أهدافاً فنية وجمالية، تصب نهايةً في الأهداف التربوية العامة. فالتلميذ في المدرسة، ليس فناناً ولا ممثلاً، ولا يجب التعامل معه من هذا المنطلق، بل هو إنسان في موقع التحصيل التعلُّمي، واكتساب الخبرات التي تتشكل منها شخصيته. وفي المدرسة، نعمل على إعداد الإنسان وليس الفنان المتخصص، ونستخدم الفن وتقنياته للوصول إلى بناء شخصية التلميذ، وليس إلى إكسابه اختصاصاً أو مهنة فنية. وهذه المسلَّمة تعتبر أساسية في تحديد مفهوم التربية المسرحية، وهي البوابة الرئيسية للدخول إلى فهم هذه الظاهرة التربوية الحديثة. والتربية المسرحية هي جزء من العملية التربوية، وليست من كمالياتها. إنها بمثابة الجناح الثاني للعملية التعلُّمية، إذا اعتبرنا أن الجناح الأول هو العلم، حيث لن يستطيع التلميذ (إنسان الغد) أن يطير ويغرد بثقة، وأن يشعر باستقلاليته، ما لم يتأمَّن هذا التوازن بين جناحيه.
