منذ السجن الأول الذي آوى يوسف الصديق عليه السلام ظلت تلك الأسوار مخزن للحريات المخبوءة والمغلفة بألم وحزن فرغم العتمة الشديدة والظلام الدامس هناك أقلام سطعت خلف المنفى.
الأدب لا يولد إلا من تجربة حية، وصادقة، فالإبداع يولد من رحم المعاناة كما يقول أصحاب السجن، لذا فإن قراءة مذكرات سجين، وما يفكر به، وما يعتريه من أفكار ومشاعر؛ هو ما حاول التعبير عنه الروائي "محمود زعرور" في "الأرض الثامنة"؛ كان يفكر دوماً في عمله الجديد، أن يكتب رده الأدبي عن أحوال سجنه، بكل ما حل به، وما كابده من صنوف التعذيب، وما لحق به من الألم والأسى (...) وأكد بأنه سيسجل قوائم كاملة بعمليات التعذيب، وفنون القهر والإذلال (...)".
يحاول هذا النص تحقيق مقاربة فنية وجمالية، تتجسد بالمزج بين السيرة وبين الرواية، مثلما يسعى، في جانب آخر، صوغ رحلة مزدوجة، واحدة إلى (امستردام)، للقاء مع منظمة العفو الدولية في هولندا لعرض أوضاع المعتقلين والتعذيب في السجن، حيث قضى بكل الرواية سنوات مع الخوف والعزلة، وثانية أخرى إلى الطبقة السابعة من الأرض، حيث مسكن الجن، طلبا لإلهام منشود.
الرواية تستدعي الواقعي من جهة، وتستعين بالتخييل من جهة أخرى، عبر لغة تتفتح على التناص مع التراث السردي العربي.
