"ما الذي يجمع الحب والحرب في نص واحد؟! ما الذي يريد أن يقوله المؤلف في رأيك؟! عالمنا الخفي، إنه يرى أن اللامرئي هو الأهم، فالكثير من الأمور الجسام تحدث ليس للأسباب التي نعرفها أو المعلنة، إنما لأسباب خفيّة لا نعلن عنها.."
هذا المقطع من الرواية يسمح للروائي العراقي بتفيذ عملية تلازم رمزية بين الحبّ والحرب، بكل ما يرتبط بهما من كلمات ومعاني، إذ يستشهد بجملة تقول أن " كلا المحبين يسعى إلى امتلاك الآخر.."، كتحضير لهذا التلازم.
تتمحور الرواية حول شخصيات تدور في إطار العمل المسرحي، من المخرج إلى الكاتب إلى الممثل، وتربط بينها علاقة مميزة من العمل والصداقة، ويتنازعها شغف الحب ذو الأوجه العديدة والمرتبطة بوجه الحبيبة.
"كأن الكاتب أعدّ النص أصلا لتعذيب الممثل أو إنهاكه"، أو الإنتقام منه، لزواجه من الفتاة التي أحبها.
قصة حب عاصف تنفتح فصولها مجدداً، نتيجة أكتشاف حقيبة تضم الرسائل العتيقة للمحبوبة التي لم يستطع نسيانها والتي بقي وجودها متمسكاً بمفاصل حياته، فيروي الكاتب فصولها، ليعبر عن مشاعر الغرام والرغبة بالإمتلاك، والشك، والغيرة، كما مشاعر الهجر، وفقدان الحبيب، وحالات الأرق، ومعايشة الكوابيس، والتي تقود إلى معاقرة الخمر والكتابة، إن لم يكن إلى السعي للإنتقام والقتل. "آه من وحشة عينيك. من حبّ كالقدر المكتوب.."، يصبح هذين البيتين بمثابة اللازمة المتكررة، وبمثابة الرمز الذي يربط مفاصل حالة الحب هذه. "ولأن كل قصص الحب متشابهة"، سوف يستمتع القارئ بتتبع حبكة هذه الرواية، وسوف يتماهى مع أحاسيس بطلها في مختلف حالاته العشقية، ومع قصة حبه الذي انتهى إلى رماد، والذي سيساعده التسامح بتحّويلها إلى حبّ آخر، "فلكي نسعد بالحبّ، يجب أن لا نغمض عيوننا، ولكن أن نتظاهر بإغماضها من حين لآخر".
