إن مجمل الأبحاث الواردة في هذا الكتاب هي مقاربات متنوعة للنص الروائي العربي الحديث، في محاولة لقراءة خصوصية خطابه عبر تلمس أبعاد دلالاته وإبراز معالم جمالياته. فهي تقوم على تخوم جدلية التعدد والوحدة، ساعية لإرساء عملية تحليل النصوص الأدبية في إطار جدلية أخرى، باعتبارها إياها أفضل السبل والطرائق لاكتناه آفاق ومرامي النص الشعرية، وباعتبارها أيضاً الشرط الضروري لمعرفة النص وفهمه.
ضمن هذه الوجهة تميزت هذه الأبحاث بسمتين عامتين الأولى اعتمادها جميعاً منهجية واضحة في معالجة النصوص الروائية ودراستها. هذه المنهجية اختلفت غالباً باختلاف النصوص موضوع البحث، ولكنها بقيت دليل العمل في جميع الدراسات الواردة.
هكذا جرت دراسة رجال في الشمس لغسان كنعاني على ضوء علم الاجتماع الأدبي، في حين اعتمد منهج علم النفس التحليل للأدب في معالجة القاهرة الجديدة، لمحفوظ، وعلم الدلالة في دراسة موسم الهجرة إلى الشمال للطيب صالح، وعالم بلا خرائط لجبرا ومنيف... وهكذا بالنسبة لباقي النصوص.
أما السمة الثانية تميزت بتطلعها إلى تحديد قسمات النص الروائي العربي الحديث كمدخل لمعرفة مقولات الخطاب العربي المعاصر وأطروحاته الشعرية والفكروية، وذلك عبر محاولة استقصاء تاريخية واجتماعية لنتاجاته.
