الرواية، من بابها الواسع، طرح جدي للصراع الاجتماعي، تجسده بنىً رسّخ الظلم الطويل، والحرمان الفاجع، تناقضاتها، وعمّق كذلك الغور الأسود الذي يفصل بينها، حتى انقطعت الجسور أو كادت، وتباعد الأفغان، ولم يعد من سبيل إلى تقارب المفاهيم... ثمة جيلان، يمثلهما أب وابن، يدخلان في معركة: الرفض، والتحدي، ودق الأرض حتى تميد من تحت أقدام المستغلين التافهين، هدف الابن، بينما الأب سادر فيما ألف، يضحي بكل شيء في سبيل الحفاظ على وضعه ومكاسبه، وتدور وراء الكواليس بينهما معركة، غريبة ومشوقة، دامية ومأساوية وممزقة، تنتهي بستار أسود يسدل بينهما، إذ ينطفئ النور، ويسود الظلام، ويستحكم الانفصال الكلي. وخلال ذلك، عبر الرواية، يحدث التخلخل، وتهتز الأرض، ويعنف الدق... النصل أمل لم يتحقق بعد، ولكنه يظل أملاً كبيراً يحمل معه بشائر مستقبل أفضل، تتطور فيه البنى الاجتماعية، وتختلف الأوضاع، وتغدو أكثر إنسانية.
