ولد عام 1936 فى جنوب البانيا, درس فى جامعة نيرانا ومعهد غوركى ثم بعد ذلك ذهب إلى موسكو لدراسة الأداب وفى عام 1960 عاد الى ألبانيا وعمل فى مجال الصحافة.
حصل إسماعيل كاداريه على جائزة بوكر الدولية عام 2005.
أصدر الكثير من الروايات والكتب ُتٌرجمت روايات كثيرة لإسماعيل كاداري/كاداريه إلى اللغات العالمية، ومنها ثماني روايات للعربية هي: "جنرال الجيش الميت" (دمشق، 1981)، وثانية بالقاهرة (2001) و"الحصن" (دمشق، 1986، وصدرت ثانية بالقاهرة، وثالثة ببيروت باسم "طبول المطر (1990)، و"من أعاد دورنتين" (بيروت 1989)، و"مدينة الحجر" (بيروت 1989)، و"الوحش" (بيروت، 1992)، و"قصر الأحلام" (بيروت، 1992)، و"الجسر" (بيروت، 1994)، و"العاشق والطاغية" (دمشق، 1999)، بينما ألف أكثر من خمسين كتاباً بالألبانية، روايات ومجموعات شعرية ومسرحيات وقصص وأبحاث فكرية وسياسية ومقابلات صحفية..

في وسط المعسكر تابعت طبول المطر دويها، فيما أخذ الجنود يغطون المعدات. بدا معسكرهم بخيامه وبيارقه، براياته وشعاراته المعدنية، بدا مخزناً صبيحة ذلك اليوم الخريفي. ها هو أعظم جيش في عصرنا يبلله المطر على مرأى ومسمع من أبراجنا ورجالنا. وسيدرك الذين سوف يعيشون على هذه الأرض من بعدنا، أنه لم يكن سهلاً علينا الصمود في هذا الصراع الهائل ضد الغول الأكثر ضراوة آنذاك. لن نشيد لهم التماثيل التذكارية والأعمدة الجليلة. إذ لم يكن لدينا الوقت لبناء ذلك، وربما لن يكونه أكثر في المستقبل، أثناء الهدوء، بين العواصف التي لا تزال بانتظارنا. لكن ها نحن نترك ما يحلّ محله. نترك ما يحل محلها. نترك هذه الحجارة الثقيلة الضخمة، حجارة أسوارنا يبللها مطر المعارك في هذا الصباح الرمادي.
