هو شاعر لبناني مولود في العام 1937 في مدينة بعلبك في البقاع اللبناني.يحاكي بقصائده المحكية الطبيعة وأسرارها كما يراها هو، بعين الشاعر المتعمّق في جماليّات وتفاصيل الذات الإنسانية الرّيفية البسيطة وعلاقتها مع الطبيعة السحرية.
ونتيجةً لتعمّقه هذا، تكون قصائد، الشاعر متقاطعة مع الذات الإنسانية الجمعية التي ترهف لصوت خرير الماء وزهر البيلسان، والعشب الذي يبزغ من وجه الجدران العتيقة.
غنّى لحيدر كبار الفنّانين الملتزمين في لبنان، مثل فيروز ومارسيل خليفة وأميمة خليل ووديع الصافي ونجوى كرم وغيرهم، إذ حملوا أغانيه برقّة أصواتهم، لتدخل البيوت دونما استئذان، رقيقةً ودافئةً، ويردّدها الجميع منتشيًا.

"كان الشعر كالخمر يُشرب في كأس الأغنية ثم بدأ الطلاق؛ صار الشعر رهين الفلسفة أي أنه صار يتجه ضد نفسه. وأصبح سجين علم النفس، فأخذ يغرق داخل ذاته بعيداً عن الآخرين. كأن لهذا الطلاق بعداً طبقياً وملابسات تعكس ملامح طلاق آخر بين الفرد والجماعة".
لعل طلال حيدر-بمنعزل عن مشكلة العامية ومضاعفاتها الإقليمية-هو الأكثر نجاة بين شعراء الحداثة في هذه المأساة. ففي شعره العبقري لا تتزاوج فحسب بل تتوحد كلمات الشعب البسيطة الحية ومشاهد الريف الحميمة مع أرقى مستويات الفكر-مستوى الحكمة الساطعة التي تلخص الفلسفة وتتجاوزها. من يذكر في زحمة الحداثة وضوضائها عمر الخيام؟ طلال حيدر خيام حديث يطرب البسطاء وهو ينقل لهم جنونه الوجودي، ويدهش النخبة وهو يفاجئها، عبر لغة المواويل والحكايات الشعبية، بحساسية شعرية مذهلة وجمالية حديثة تذكر بشعراء أوروبا الكبار. لعله، إذن، باجتراحه هذه "العجيبة"-إعادة الوحدة بين الغناء والشعر-هو الأكثر قدرة على إعلان إفلاس الشعر العربي الحديث وإعادة اعتباره من جديد. فهو إذ يستعيدنا من غربتنا يعيد إلينا شعرنا الهارب الجميل...
