الكاتب والمحلل "هادي محيي الخفاجي" يردّ في كتاب هذا "سنوات ضائعة من حياة المتنبي" وبشكل لم يتناوله كاتب من قبل، يردّ على الادعاءات التي دونها الدكتور طه حسين في كتابه "مع المتنبي" مفنداً الادعاءات مغالطاً لها مبيناً خطأ ما ذهب إليه "طه حسين" وذلك عبر دراسته لأشعار المتنبي في سنوات صباه، ثم السنوات اللاحقة، ومن المسائل التي درسها المؤلف، مبيناً مغالطتها: مولد المتنبي ونشأته ونسبه، هل نجح شاعر الكوفة في بداوته حيث أخفق الآخرون، عودة المتنبي وعلاقته بقرامطة الكوفة، الصعلكة الثانية، في السجن، الحرية التصعلك مرة ثانية، إلى طبرية، لامية وصف الأسد، عود إلى التشرد والتصعلك.
