تعدّ "السيرة" من أكثر فنون الأدب الشعبي، العربي انتشاراً وتشكل السيرة قسماً قائماً بحدّ ذاته من الأدب الشعبي، الذي يمكن تسميته "الأدب العالمي"، الذي لقي رواجاً وانتشاراً منذ القرن "15" وحتى اليوم الراهن. وهذا الفن الذي يتناوله المؤلف بالدراسة طريف "بموقعه" إذ أنه يعدّ جسراً فريداً من نوعه بين أدب القرون الوسطى والأدب الحديث، منطلقاً بجذوره إلى الماضي السحيق، ومحافظاً حتى على الآثار الميثولوجية في تطور الأحداث وصياغة الصفحات، تبدو السيرة وكأنما تمد خيوطها إلى الأدب الحديث، ومن جملته الرواية العربية المعاصرة.
ومن هنا نرى أن السيرة-فن معقد من حيث التركيب، إذ تتماذج فيها عناصر مختلفة بسماتها التاريخية والزمنية، فالرواية الشعبية تستوعب الأسطورة والحكاية والقصة المأثورة العربية، وفقرات من المدوّنات التاريخية العائدة إلى القرون الوسطى، بل إنها أشبه ما تكون بعملية كيميائية بحيث تمتزج الأجزاء المركبة مكونة مادة واحدة: ميثيولوجية ومواضيع حكائية، وعناصر الملحمة البطولية التي تكتسب صبغة واحدة عامة لا تتسم بها سوى السيرة.
ولإيضاح البنية الداخلية لهذا الدمج، بدأت المؤلفة بحثها بالحديث عن تاريخ دراسة الرواية الشعبية ثم انتقلت إلى إيضاح وتحليل البنية الداخلية للسيرة الشعبية ومن ثم تناولت بالدراسة والمعالجة شخصيات الرواية الشعبية التي تعتبر مفتاحاً مزيداً من نوعه لمواصلة تحليل هذا الفن الطريف.
وفيما يتعلق بدراسة مادة البحث لم تتناول المؤلفة المخطوطات كمادة لبحثها، بل تناولت مؤلفات مطبوعة تؤلف ملحمة شعبية عربية كتبية صادرة في دمشق والقاهرة. أما السير التي استندت إليها في دراستها وأخذتها كنماذج لها في "سيرة ذات الهمة" 4 مجلدات، "سيرة عنترة" 8 مجلدات، "سيرة سيف" 4 مجلدات، "سيرة حمزة البهلوان" مجلد واحد، "سيرة (قصة) علي الزيبق وقصة الزير سالم المهلهل".
