الهدف من وضع هذه الدراسة هو الإسهام في تعميق الرؤية الاجتماعية وبلورة المفاهيم العلائقية في المجتمع من النواحي السياسية الاجتماعية والفكرية... وفيه يجيب المؤلف على كافة الأسئلة التي يثيرها انخراط المرأة في العمل غير المنزلي من حيث التغيير الطارئ على موقفها ودورها في المستويات الاجتماعية المتعددة وعلى صورتها الشائعة.
إن العمل يسمح للعامل باكتشاف ذاته ورصد الخيارات الحاسمة المناسبة لحياته على طريق تأكيد دوره في الحياة الاجتماعية والسياسية، فإلى أي حد أسهم عمل المرأة اللبنانية في بلورة وعيها لمصلحتها الشخصية وفي عملية اكتشاف ذاتها، وخاصة في اتخاذ القرارات الخاصة بحياتها وتحمل مسؤوليتها؟ هل أتاح لها علها تأكيد دور جديد لها أم بقي امتداداً لدورها التقليدي المتمثل بالطاعة والانصياع لمن يتولى أمرها حتى في أكثر أمورها الذاتية حميمية؟ وهل سمح لها عملها باتخاذ قراراتها الذاتية متحملة مسؤوليتها؟ إن معرفة الواقع ضرورة أساسية للانطلاق في إطار التغيير، وهنا تكمن أهمية هذه الدراسة وخاصة إزاء ندرة الأبحاث والإحصائيات حول المرأة العاملة.
إن هذه الدراسة لواقع المرأة العاملة في لبنان يمكن أن تستفيد منها الحركة النسائية اللبنانية بكافة توجهاتها في نضالها لتوعية المرأة والمطالبة بحقوقها. وقد استخدم الباحث لقياس وتحليل هذه الأوضاع والاتجاهات نموذجاً تحليلياً متدامجاً سُداسي المتغيرات المفردة، مع تنوع في أوضاع كل منها. والمتغيرات هذه هي منطقة السكن، العمر، الدراسة المحصلة، المهنة، الأصل الاجتماعي والانتماء الديني، هذا وقد ألحقت الدراسة بمجموعة من الجداول الإحصائية المفردة والمزدوجة.
