ومع ذلك، فإن التاريخ السردي الصريح لتصاعد عدم الإيمان لا يتحدث عن ماضٍ انقضى، بل يندرج ضمن جدلية القديم والجديد، أي ضمن الاستمرارية والانقطاع: فكل المسائل المرتبطة اليوم بالإيمان وباللائكية هي في صراع مع ماضٍ ذي بعدين – فعدم الإيمان والإنسانوية الحصرية يُعرَّفان بالنسبة إلى العلاقة مع الكيفية القديمة للإيمان، القائمة على التأليهية وعلى التمثلات «السحرية» للعالم.
ويظل هذا التعريف إذن مترافقاً مع عدم الإيمان اليوم؛ وفي الجانب الآخر، فإن أشكال عدم الإيمان التي ظهرت فيما بعد ومحاولات إعادة تعريف الإيمان تتحدد بالنسبة إلى العلاقة مع هذه الإنسانوية الثورية الأولى للحرية والانضباط والنظام.
