لقد نزعت اللسانيات البنيوية، من خلال نظرتها إلى اللغة على أنها أداة تعبير منفصلة عن السياق، إلى اعتبار الملفوظات مجرد نتاج للنظام الذي يولّدها وتنبني عليه. ولهذا، كانت مهمة التحليل الصوتي والصرفي والتركيبي والدلالي في إطار البنيوية هي رصد مختلف الوحدات التابعة لها والقواعد التي تنظمها، للوقوف على دورها في بناء ذلك النظام. في المقابل، تدعونا المقاربة التداولية، بمختلف اتجاهاتها، إلى إعادة النظر في هذا التصور الذي يرى في اللغة مجرد أداة للإبلاغ، وتنبهنا إلى أن صياغة أفكارنا ونقلها عن طريق اللغة إنما هما حصيلة استراتيجيات معيّنة على مستوى الإنتاج والتأويل ينخرط فيها المشاركون في عملية التواصل ليصبح كل منهم طرفا مؤثرا في مقامات تفاعلية تحكمها شروط معلومة. ذلك لأن كل خطاب وفق هذا المنظور إنما يتم إنتاجه وتفسيره في علاقته بسياقه المباشر، وفي علاقته بخطابات وسياقات أخرى تتعاوره وتحدد وظيفته وتمنحه قيمته في سياقه الاجتماعي التواصلي المعلوم.
في هذا السياق، تأتي هذه الدراسة الجادّة للغة النزاع لتبرز دور اللغة بوصفها ليس فقط أداة إبلاغ وتواصل بل أيضا أداة للفعل والتوجيه والحوار والمناورة والسيطرة، وكذلك بوصفها أداة لتمثيل الخصم المنازَع، لتقزيمه وتهميشه، في مقابل الأنا المنازِع لتفخيمه وتعظيمه، وإضفاء الشرعية على سلوكه ومواقفه وآرائه. وبهذا تتجلى سمة اللغة في واقعها الفعليّ الحيّ، بوصفها بنية إدراكية حجاجية اجتماعية متحيزة، وأنها وعاء لما يريد كل من أطراف الخطاب إظهاره للآخرين، ولما يبطنه في نفسه تجاههم.
