يقول المحقق بأن اختياره لكتاب الطوفي في الجدل للتحقيق والنشر يعود لسببين أحدهما قلة ما طبع من الكتب الجدلية، وما طبع منها طبعات علمية خاصة، وذلك بالرغم من أنه لا يمكن فهم منهج علم أصول الفقه، وهو من أهم العلوم النظرية في الإسلام، ولا الأسلوب الفكري الذي يسير عليه هذا العلم إلا من مثل هذه الكتب، وليس هناك إذن من شك في خطورتها من هذه الجهة، وفي ضرورة الزيادة في تحقيق الأصول التي تيسر موادّ البحث في علم الجدل لتكون في أيدي المتخصصين في الفكر الإسلامي.
والسبب الثاني هو أن هذا الكتاب مثل واضح لغرض من أهم أغراض مؤلفه وهو النزعة إلى استئناف البحث في مقالات الدين وعلومه على أساس القرآن، فإن القسم الرئيسي من هذا الكتاب وهو الباب الخامس يشتمل على إثبات جميع المناظرات الموجودة في القرآن وشرحها بالمصطلحات الجدلية، ومعنى ذلك على ما يظهر هو الاستدلال من المثال القرآني على جواز علم الجدل وتحليله. وقد خفي هذا الغرض على بعض المطلعين على الكتاب.
وقد اعتمد المحقق في تحقيق هذا الكتاب على مخطوطين في مكتبتين من مكتبات استانبول هما شهيد علي باشا رقم 2315 (المحفوظ الآن في المكتبة السليمانية) وادما دزاده مرادملا رقم 30. وقد رتّب المؤلف كتابه على مقدمة وأبواب وخاتمة. أما المقدمة ففي بيان اشتقاق علم الجدل وحدّه. وأما الأبواب الخمسة: الأول في بيان حكمه شرعاً، والثاني في آدابه، والثالث في أركانه، والرابع في أقسام الاستدلال وحصرها، والخامس في استقراء ما في الكتاب العزيز من الوقائع الجدلية وتقرير جريانها على القانون الجدليّ، ولأجل ذلك وضع هذا الكتاب. وأما الخاتمة ففي ذكر جملة من الحوارات الجدلية الواقعة في ماضي الزمان بين الناس. وقد تضمن الكتاب تمهيداً للمحقق بالألمانية.
