معظم روايات فوكنر ذات نغمة مأساوية حادة لأنها، في معظمتها، تمزج المأساة بالملهاة، وكانت روح المرح عنده من ميراث مارك توين وكُتّاب سابقين آخرين، حيث كان لمارك توين تأثير مباشر على فوكنر، وتتسم قصص فوكنر القصيرة بسمات رواياته من حيث الأسلوب والفكرة والطابع.
وكان لفوكنر تأثير كبير في الروائيين على مستوى العالم، بإعتراف روائيين معاصرين كبار، مثل الروائية الأميركية توني موريسون حاملة جائزة نوبل للآداب لعام 1993م، والتي تخرجت في جامعة "هوارد" في واشنطن بعدما قدمت أطروحتها المعنونة "الإنتحار في روايات وليام فوكنر وفرجينيا وولف، كما روايتي "الجاز" و"الفردوس".
كذلك اعترف الروائي الكولومبي جابرييل جارسيا ماركيز الحائز جائزة نوبل في الآداب لعام 1982، بتأثير فوكنر القوي فيه، حيث قال: "إذا كانت رواياتي جيدة فذلك لسبب واحد هو أنني حاولت أن أتجاوز فوكنر في كتابه ما هو مستحيل وتقديم عوالم وإنفعالات، يستحيل أن تقدمها الكتابة والكلمات مثل فوكنر، ولكن لم أستطع أن أتجاوز فوكنر أبداً إلا أنني اقتربت منه".
وأيضاً قال الروائي البيروفي ماريو فارجاس يوسا: "تأثير فوكنر في أعمال كبير جداً، وضعه الكثير من كتاب العالم في مصاف كبار القرن العشرين، فهو اخترع نظاماً عالمياً للرواية، وابتكر حبكة جيدة للقصة وأدخل إلى النثر الإثارة والترقب، وتشبه عوالم فوكنر عوالم أميركا اللاتينية: مجتمع ريفي فيه الكثير من العناصر الإقطاعية والإثنية.
وجعل هذا التقارب الكثير منا يتأثرون به، وقد اكتشفته حين كنت شاباً، انبهرت من طريقته البارعة في تنظيم الحبكة، الزمن المتشابك، طريقته في توليد الأحداث، لا يوجد كاتب من أميركا اللاتينية من جيلي لم يتأثر بشكل مباشر بفوكنر...
