إذا كان الشعراء ينتمون بفكرهم لفصيلة الدائرة (عالم متكرر ومنطبق على نفسه) أو عالم المربعات (أفكار لها حدود متشابهة و لكنها تنتظم في الفضاء الاجتماعي بنقاط تمفصل مختلفة) فإن الشاعر الأمريكي فيليب تيرمان يرسم عالما من ثلاثة أضلاع (عالم مثلثات – عالم ألوغاريتمي) وأضلاعه هي: الدين والطبيعة والعائلة.
إن أول ما يلفت الانتباه في قصائده النبرة الغنائية التي تذكرني بشخصيتين مرّتا في تاريخ الشعر الحديث:
الأولى من الأسلاف وهو الأمريكي والت ويتمان مؤلف أوراق العشب الذي حرث الأرض وهيأها لردم الهوة بين الطبيعة والإنسان بحيث لا يستطيع أي طرف منهما أن يحمل أعباء القصيدة وحده. وهذه أهم سمات قصائد تيرمان. فهو يحتفل بالطبيعة مثلما يحتفل بموضع الإنسان منها. إنه يرسم بالكلمات مناظر طبيعية تشكل خلفية اللوحة وفي الصدارة تجد الإنسان البسيط الحائر الذي يبحث عن طريقة للتفاهم مع نفسه.
كلاهما ينظر بعين الرهبة والاحترام للخط الفاصل بين الحياة والموت، أو للشيخوخة.
