أليكسي مكسيموفيتش بيشكوف، ويعرف بمكسيم غوركي (28 مارس 1868 - 18 يونيو 1936)، أديب وناشط سياسي ماركسي روسي، مؤسس مدرسة الواقعية الاشتراكية التي تجسد النظرة الماركسية للأدب حيث يرى أن الأدب مبني على النشاط الاقتصادي في نشأته ونموه وتطوره، وأنه يؤثر في المجتمع بقوته الخاصة، لذلك ينبغي توظيفه في خدمة المجتمع.
ولد في نجني نوفجراد عام 1868، وأصبح يتيم الأب والأم وهو في التاسعة من عمره، فتولت جدته تربيته، وكان لهذه الجدة أسلوب قصصي ممتاز، مما صقل مواهبه القصصية.
وبعد وفاة جدته تأثر لذلك تأثرأ كبيراً مما جعله يحاول الانتحار.
تعنى كلمة جوركى باللغة الروسية "المر" وقد اختارها الكاتب لقبا مستعارا له من واقع المرارة التي كان يعانى منها الشعب الروسى تحت الحكم القيصرى والتي شاهدها بعينه خلال المسيرة الطويلة التي قطعها بحثا عن القوت ، وقد انعكس هذا الواقع المرير يشكل واضح على كتاباته وبشكل خاص في رائعته "الأم".
أهم أعماله: - رواية الأم.
- رواية الطفولة.
- مسرحية الحضيض.
- قصيدة "انشودة نذير العاصفة".
- الطفولة 1913-1914 - الأعداء؛دراما؛1906 - جامعاتي 1923 بالإضافة للعديد من المسرحيات والقصص والمقالات.

«ها هي ذي الرّيح تمزّق حجب الغيوم الكثيفة، وها هو ذا شعاع الشَّمس يسطع في زرقة السَّماء، وها هي ذي هذه البهائم الممراح تستقبلها بصرخة واحدة وهي تفتل شواربها فوق أشداقها الطَّيِّبة. أيُّ إنسانٍ يستطيع أن يمنع نفسه من ضم هذه الحيوانات، ذوات القائمتين، ومن تقبيلها؟ إنها حيوانات ذكيَّة فيما تعمل، ماهرة فيما تصنع، وإنها لتغرق في العمل حتى تنسى نفسها. وهل يستطيع شيءٌ في الوجود أن يقاوم هذه الطَّاقة من العمل الذي بدأ، وهذه الفورة من القوَّة التي تفتَّحت راضية ومطمئنة؟ إنها قادرة على خلق المعجزات، قادرة على أن تَهِبَ، في ليلة واحدة، للأرض كلَّها ماء يملؤها قصوراً رائعة ومدناً زاهية زاهرة تخجل منها القصور والمدن التي ورد ذكرها في الأساطير».
ومكسيم غوركي في كتابه هذا يقصّ علينا أنباء تلك الانطلاقة إلى المجد والحريَّة، وأخبار تلك الثَّورة التي اشتعلت نيرانها في بلاده فنقلتها من جحيم الذُّل والجهل والفقر والمرض إلى نعيم العزة والعلم والثَّروة والعافية.
