تمَّ الاعتماد على منهج علمي في هذه الرسالة، وهو منهج التّحليل الدّاخلي الذي يقوم على دراسة نصوص الحسين بن الضّحَاك الشّعريّة وتحليلها من خلال ديوانه الذي جمعه عبد الستار أحمد فرّاج وأسماه أشعار الخليع الحسين بن الضحّاك، ومن خلال كتب التّاريخ والأدب التي تحدثت عن سيرة الحسين بن الضحّاك وعصره، فتّم الاستنطاق الدّاخلي لتلك النصوص والكتب؛ واستخلاص الأحداث والمناسبات والجلسات من خلالها، في دراسة تقوم على التحليل الداخلي للنصوص. وهذا المنهج أتاح لي في الباب الأوّل معرفة جوانب كثيرة من حياة الحسين بن الضّحّاك في العصر العبّاسيّ، وأراني صوراً من العلاقات الكثيرة التي كان يجريها الحسين بن الضحّاك مع الخلفاء ورجال الدّولة، والشُّعراء، والمغنّين، والغلمان. فقد كان الحسين بن الضحّاك نديماً، وشاعراً، وصديقاً، وحبيباً.
