يحتل الروائي النرويجي كنوت هامسون (1859-1952)، الحائز على جائزة نوبل عام 1920، مكانة مهمة في الأدب النرويجي والعالمي.
صدرت رواية "پان" عام 1894، بعد صدور روايته الشهيرة "الجوع" عام 190. وقد شرع هامسون في كتابة رواية "پان" في باريس، ثم انتقل إلى كوبنهاجن وقضى معها شهوراً، وأتمّها في النرويج. وتُعتبر الرواية من أعمال هامسون الأدبية المهمة، التي جذبت انتباه النقّاد إليه. فقد كتب الناقد النرويجي المعروف نورديل غريج: رواية "پان" التي صدرت عام 1894، هي انتصار كنوت هامسون الأدبي، إنها عمل شبابه الكبير والريادي، آلاف القراء توقدت عقولهم لحكاية الملازم غلان ونسائه: ادفارد السمراء، الرائعة، التي أصبحت قدره، وإيفا المخلصة، التي انتهت إلى الانهيار. يقص كنوت هامسون عن الحب بطريقة لم نسمع بها سابقاً قط، وجهل من نورلاند مملكة أحلام، أما الفصل عن الليالي الثلاث، فقد كانت لنا بمثابة أناجيل طبيعية، التي كانت مؤلمة وممتعة في أن تُقرأ في غرفة."
تحتل ثيمة الإنسان المعاصر - وعالمه النفسي وتناقضاته الداخلية، وهو يواجه وجوده الآني، مكانة مركزية في هذه الرواية كما في باقي أدبه. وهو يبتعد عن الأسلوب الواقعي التربوي الذي امتاز به جيل سابقيه من الأدباء النرويجيين كأبسن، أو كيلان، وآخرين، ولهذا نراه يهاجمهم في أكثر من مناسبة ومحفل، ويُطالب بأدب غير تربوي أو واقعي، وهو الأمر الذي نلمسه بوضوح في رواية "پان".
مع ذلك، فقد استمد العديد من العناصر الأسلوبية والجمالية في أدبه سواء من مواطنه ستاندبرغ، أو من نيتشه ودستوفيسكي. وكان ذلك التأثير واضحاً على رواياته وتصوراته الأدبية وأسلوبه الفني.
صدرت له أكثر من أربعين رواية وعدداً من الدواوين الشعرية والمسرحيات والكتب النثرية.
