لم تستغ هذه الرقّة المغالية.... بل لم يعمل ذلك سوى على تأكيد شكوكها..".
هذه التمزّقات بين الرغبة... وما ينتج عنها... بين الإنجذاب... والخوف من نتائجه، تقود ميلان كونديرا في هذه الرواية، وهو يعبّر عن هذه التيمة بصورها المتعدّدة... والمتطرّفة... فكونديرا كعادته ينبش ما تخبئه النفس الإنسانية في الأماكن التي تسبب القلق وتظهر تناقضات هذه النفس.
