أيّ طموح لكاتب أو فنان لم يراوده هذا الإحساس من حين لآخر؟ إن تأمّل إنجازات الماضي اللّامعة هو ملهم وغير مشجّع في نفس الآن. لكن بريتش مخطئ، بطبيعة الحال. في مقابل كلّ جيبون متحمّس ومكافح يعمل بلا كلل، متحرّراً من شكوك التقدير الذاتي وأزماته التي تقرّبنا من البشر الفانين، هناك وليام جيمس آخر أو فرانز كافكا؛ عبقريتان عظيمتان تبدّدان الوقت، وتنتظران في فراغ حضور الإلهام، تجرّبان حصارات معذّبة وجفافاً إبداعيّاً، وتعانيان من شكوك وانعدام الأمان. في الواقع، معظم الأسماء التي تظهر في هذا الكتاب تلتقي عند نقطة مشتركة ما: مستسلمين للعمل اليومي، ولكن غير واثقين أبداً من مردوديته. دائماً متوجّسين من اليوم السيّئ الذي تتراجع فيه إنجازاتهم. كلّهم يجدون الوقت اللّازم لإتمام إبداعاتهم. لكن ثمة اختلافات لانهائية بخصوص الطريقة التي يهيكلون بها حياتهم لحسن استغلاله.
