رى الـــروائي التونسي شكري المبخوت في كتـــابه «سيرة الغائب، سيرة الآتي... السيرة الذاتية في كتاب «الأيام» لطه حسين» أن نص «الأيام» مخاتل، يستعصي على التصنيف ما بين الرواية والسيرة الذاتية. ويضيف أن طه حسين خلق نصه من معدن التردد واللبس؛ فلا هو من جهة جنسه الأدبي رواية تقرّ فتطمئن إليها نفسك، ولا هو سيرة ذاتية أوفت شروط هذا الفن حقها؛ تردد بينها مستمر والحلقة مفرغة؛ أراد بعض النقاد كسر طوقها فوقعوا في أحابيلها. ولا يساور القارئ العادي لـ «الأيام» شك في أن الكتاب يروي بأسلوب طه حسين قصة حياة الرجل، ويدرجها في جنس السيرة الذاتية انطلاقاً من معارفه الحدسية بطرائق انتظام هذا اللون الأدبي. فكتاب «الأيام» يشف عن بعض قواعد كتابة السيّر ذاتية؛ مثل المنظور الاستعادي وازدواج البطل، فهو صبي تارة وكهل تارة أخرى.."
