حكايات رواية «عين الحمام» متوازية، في أوّل أمرها، تجري وقائعُها بين عالمين فتتباعد في المكان والأجواء ثمّ تتقارب إذ ينسج الراوي خيوطها ليكشف التواريخ السرّيّة للشخصيّات التي تتحرّك هنا أو هناك كلّما تقدّم السرد.
إنّها رواية تشبه مروحة يد إسبانيّة (أو صينيّة) بديعة النقوش والرقوش والتصاوير ومختلف ضروب الوشي والتزويق.
وإذ يحرّك الراوي ورقات المروحة، في تأنّ وإحكام فاصلًا بين حكاياتها الجزئيّة واصلًا بينها لبناء عالم ثريّ متنوّع، نرى صورًا من معاناة أبناء تونس الأعماق والعائدين إليها من مهاجرهم في تردّدهم وحيرتهم، بأسرارهم وأوجاعهم وأحلامهم الحقيرة والكبيرة في قرية ككلّ القرى التي نعرف وإن جعلها تنام بين جبل وبحر. لكنّ قرية «عين الحمام» استحالت بفعل السرد مختلفة عن بقيّة القرى. فقد استنبط الروائيُّ من الرتيبِ العاديِّ الطريفَ النفيسَ واستخرج من المألوفِ الذي يقدّمه بعين أنتروبولوجيّ خبيرٍ فرائدَ مدهشةً بنى بها عالم الرواية التخييليّ بعين الفنّان العارف الذي يلتقط الشوارد.
