منذ أن تخطّى الفتح الإسلامي حدود العالم المسيحي في القرن السابع الميلادي، بدت العلاقة صعبة ومتشابكة بين الإسلام والمسيحية؛ وقد إزدادت الأمور تعقيداً عندما بادر المسيحيون بدورهم إلى إقتحام العالم الإسلامي من خلال ما يعرف بالحملات الصليبية؛ ولكن رغم العداء المعلن والمسلّح فقد تطوّرت أيضاً بين العالمين علاقات جوار وحوار وتفاعل حضاري متبادل.
والملفت أن الفتح الإسلامي، عوض أن يوحّد المسيحيين، أدى على العكس تماماً إلى مزيد من الإنقسام بين مختلف الفئات المسيحية، وخصوصاً داخل الإمبراطورية البيزنطية نفسها حيث أدّى ضعف السلطة المركزية إلى تحرّر ونموّ مختلف الفرق المسيحية المناهضة العقيدة الرسمية، والمتجاذبة بين عاصمتي المسيحية: القسطنطينية وروما.
يغطّي هذا الكتاب بالتفصيل علاقة الإسلام بالمسيحيين منذ الفتح الإسلامي وحتى السقوط النهائي للإمبراطورية البيزنطية في القرن الخامس عشر، وهو أكثر من مجرّد كتاب في التاريخ، إذ يقدّم مشاهد نابضة بالحياة من جدلية تكوين صورة الآخر من قبل الآخر في الديانتين الكبيرتين اللتين جمع بينهما التوحيد والجوار وفرّق بينهما العداء وسوء الفهم المتبادل.
