بدأتْ فكرةُ هذا الكتاب، عندما قَرَّرتُ، منطلقاً من تجربتي في تلفزيون لبنان، أن أضع مشروع برنامج سياسي وثائقي، يمتد على حلقات عدة، هدفه إعادة تظهير الخطوط العريضة للحياة السياسية اللبنانية، منذ الإستقلال حتى العام 1975، وفي خلالها تبيان أسباب عدم إستطاعة اللبنانيين بناء دولة حقيقية، حديثة وديموقراطية، دولة قانون ومؤسسات، ينتمي إليها المواطن اللبناني مباشرة، من دون الإضطرار إلى المرور بالوسيط الطائفي أو المذهبي، وذلك من باب الإقتناع الشخصي بأن غياب تلك الدولة أوصلنا إلى الحرب الأهلية، فسمح أولاً بنشوبها، وثانياً بإستمرارها طيلة ستة عشر عاماً ويزيد.
قلت إنني انطلقت من تجربتي في تلفزيون لبنان لأنني لمست يومها لمس اليد، من خلال موقعي كمدير للأخبار، وبعد حوالي أربع سنوات من بداية تنفيذ الطائف، أننا لم نتعلم الدرس، وعملنا، ولا نزال، على إعادة ترميم الدولة، محتفظين بالأساس الهش القديم ذاته، بدل أن نعمل على إعادة بنائها من الأساس.
كإعلامي، رأيت يومها أن هذا المشروع يمكن أن يكون واحدة من الوسائل المتاحة لي، لكي أمارس، كفرد ومن موقعي المهني، مسؤولتي عن تظهير ما أعتقده حقائق مفيدة، تؤدي عملية إعادة التذكير بها، وتبيان ترابطها، والتركيز عليها، إلى المساهمة، على طريقتي، في النقاش الدائر بشأن المستقبل.
