تبدأ الرواية باكتشاف مذهل للفتى مايكل أثناء رحلة ميدانية مع مدرسته لحوض الدرافيل، إذ يجد نفسه بدون تفكير يقفز إلى الماء ويسبح مع الدرافيل ببساطة وتلقائية كما لو كان يفعل هذا طوال حياته، وتجد أمه باتريسيا نفسها مُلزمة بتقديم تفسير لابنها وأن تكشف له حقائق ماضٍ لم يكن يعلم عنه شيئًا، ويسافران معًا إلى جزر الباهاما، حيث وُلِد مايكل وحيث اختفى والده بطريقة غامضة، وحيث يخوض مغامرة جريئة وخطيرة لاستعادة ما فقده من تاريخ.
