يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يوضح للقارئ، وخصوصاً للقارئ العربي، حقيقة الصورة المرسومة في مخيلته عن المجتمع الكويتي الذي ما زال يتصوره البعض بأن كل فرد من أفراده يملك بئر نفط، ويعيش حياة بعيدة جداً عن ما تعيشه المجتمعات المحيطة، ولا سيما المجتمعات العربية.
من ناحية أخرى، فإن الكويتيين أضاعوا كثيراً من الفرص لبناء اقتصاد يستطيعون حمل هيكله بأقل ما يمكن من مساعدة الغير. ولم يقرأوا تاريخ الدول التي تعيش اليوم معاناة البطالة وتبعات التنمية بعد أن كانوا يرفلون بثوب رفاه أوسع منهم.
لم يعرف الكويتيون كيف يستفيدون من تدفق المهاجرين ويتبعون سياسة الانتقاء مع تطبيق سياسة تكافئ الفرص والكفاءة وعبأ سكاني أكثر منهم عدداً، ويقيمون علاقة مع العمالة الأجنبية تقوم على أساس المصالح المتبادلة ويسنون تشريعات العمل والإقامة على هذا الأساس.
لقد تأثر الكويتيون بذورة حركة الوطنية القومية العربية التي سادت الوطن العربي في الخمسينات والستينات، وفتحوا بلدهم على مصراعيه، وسخروا إمكانياتهم المادية والإعلامية للقضايا العربية، وفوجئوا صبيحة الثاني من آب/ أغسطس 1990 بأنهم أصبحوا يبحثون عن مأوى بعد أن احتل بلدَهم الجيش الشقيق الذي تقاسموا معه لقمة العيش في أثناء حرب دامت ثماني سنوات مع جارة بينهما علاقة تاريخية.
كان يمكن لاقتصاد المصدر الواحد، وهو النفط، أن يحفز الكويتيين على الاستفادة من تجارب الدول التي تشاركها هذا النمط من الاقتصاد، ويجعلوا من التعليم حجر الزاوية في بناء نسيجهم الاجتماعي كما هو في بناء بنية اقتصادهم، ويركزوا على المورد البشري كمصدر باق في الوقت الذي يقلقهم مخزون النفط بين طبقات جيولوجية في باطن أرضهم. هل الشهرة التي اكتسبوها كشعب نخبة مرفهة نابعة من واقع أم هو مجرد وهم عكسته سلوكيات من أطلق عليهم الغير في الخمسينات بأن الكويت جوهرة الخليج.
هذا ما تحاول هذه الدراسة أن ترسم صورته وفق تحليل علمي.
