عمل مترجماً في الهيئة العامة للاستعلامات بين عامي 1956 و1957، وعمل مخرجاً للدراما، ومذيعاً في البرنامج الثاني (الثقافي) الذي كان من مؤسسيه حتى عام 1975 حيث منع من الكتابة. بعد منعه من الكتابة ترك مصر وسافر كثيراً في افريقيا و آسيا بحثاً عن العمل كمترجم. منذ عام 1981 وحتى 1995 عاش في جنيف حيث عمل هناك كمترجم للأمم المتحدة. بعدها رجع إلى مصر ولا يزال هناك.
حاز على جائزة الدولة التقديرية فى الآداب سنة 1998
حصل على جائزة جوزيبي اكيربي الإيطالية سنة 2000 عن خالتي صفية والدير حصل على الجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية عن روايته واحة الغروب.
