اسرة إسكندر باشا، والمنزل الصيفى الكبير على ضفاف بحر مرمرة، لحظة سقوط الحلم العثماني، الإمبراطورية عام1899. الأب السفير السابق يصاب بجلطة تمنعه النطق، فتلتف الاسرة لأول مرة حوله لتحكي، وطارق علي بسرديته ذات الطراز الفخم، ينسج اختلاج هوية مهددة تغشاها كل ألوان الانفعال تحت مد التغيير القادم، اوروبا تطرق الإمبراطورية بالحداثة، والقالب المللحمى لرواية الجيل، مضفر بولع القرن الواحد والعشرين؛ التفاصيل والحسية، الحب والهجران، الجنس و ازمة امة كاملة، العمل السري والطبقية، وامرأة حجرية، تمثال بضيعة الباشا، تمسع في ثباتها كل الاعترافات، والتحول يحدث حولها فى سياسة العالم، و الكل يلوم، ثم يبحث عن السبب. الثورة حتمية، ووعود السلطان ترجئها، المعارك العسكرية لم تبد فى الصورة، لكن الوجوه التي تحتها طارق على تمتد ملامحها حتى نحس ارتعاشة نبض اسرة الباشا وهى العاصفة الشخصية، السياسة و الاجتماعية، حتى نسمع المرأة الحجرية يروى لها كل شئ.
