منذ اعتقال الشاعر اليوناني يانيس ريتسوس، في 1967، وشعره يترجم الى لغات عدة بينها الإسبانية والإنكليزية والفرنسية والإيطالية. و قد شاع شعره على الساحة العالمية، وخاصة بعد قيام الديكتاتورية العسكرية في بلاده، وتعطيل الحياة الثقافية هناك، فضلاً عن المصير الأليم الذي حفّ بشاعر من أكبر شعراء هذا العصر.
ويمتاز شعر ريتسوس، بين ما يمتاز به، بأن علاقته بالأشياء دائمة وعميقة. فالأبواب والنوافذ وأدوات الطبخ والملابس البالية والأقنعة الصدئة والتماثيل المكسورة، تملأ قصائده وتبث مناخها فيها. أما الحرية، في كل أبعادها، فلم تفارق الشاعر الذي قال ذات مرة "إذا كان الموت هنا، فهو يأتي ثانياً على الدوام. الحرية دائماً هي الأولى".
