هناك أسباب كثيرة وراء الصراعات التي تظهر في مجتمع ما، فلو حاول كل واحد من الأفراد فهم أسبابها لاستطاع بشيء من التسامح أن يتقبل ما هو متعارض مع أفكاره، ولأمكن امتصاص عوامل النزاع.
وقد يسأل كل منا: لماذا أطيع شخصاً أو سلطة؟ لماذا لا أعيش كما يروقني؟ هل أجبر على الطاعة إذا ما عصيت؟ ومن يجبرني؟ وإلى أي مدى وباسم من ومن أجل ماذا؟
فإكراه الفرد على الطاعة يعني تجريده من حريته، وهذا بدوره يفضي إلى نزع بعض إنسانيته عنه. غير أن الحرية مصطلح متعدد الأوجه والمعاني، أهم وجوهه اثنان: السلبي الذي تتضمّنه الإجابة عن السؤال: ما هو المجال الذي يترك فيه للفرد حرية العمل؟ والإيجابي الذي تتضمّنه الإجابة عن السؤال: كيف نمارس حريتنا؟
