في كل نص حديث يتناول تاريخ الأديان يطالعنا اسم مرسيا إلياد الروماني (1907_1986) المؤرخ والفيلسوف والخبير في تاريخ الأفكار والمعتقدات الدينية والأساطير . كان مرسيا الياد ثالث ثلاثة رومانيين أغنوا الثقافة العالمية بشكل مذهل واستطاعوا أن يحملوا معهم شعلة الإبداع والخلق من بلادهم رومانيا التي "في لحمها تسيل بيزنطة وتـتسكع مرة في أوروبا ومرة في الشرق" كما يقول شاعرها مرسيا دينسكو: تريستان تزارا في الشعر وإميل سيوران في الفلسفة ومرسيا إلياد في تاريخ الأديان. الخيمياء كانت أيضا في صلب اهتمامات إلياد الذي لم يكن يعتبرها أصلا خرافيا للكيمياء ساد العصور الوسطى ولكن ظاهرة تسمح لنا بتفسير الأديان والمعتقدات كظواهر ثقافية إيجابية وجديرة بالاهتمام، ملاحقاً جذورها في المجتمعات القديمة حيث كانت النباتات والأحجار والمعادن تتخذ طابعا مقدسا وتنمو الخامات المعدنية مثل الأجنَة في رحم الأرض الأم. منقباً في الأساطير الأفريقية والصينية واليونانية والهندية يعتبر مرسيا إلياد أن تجربة المقدس تجربة كونية ومؤسسة للنوع البشري: يباغتنا العملاق الروماني باستشهادات من أعلام الثقافة العربية والإسلامية مثل الإمام جعفر الصادق وابن وحشية النبطي وابن سينا وابن الرومي في وصفه للسيف (العضب) في كتابه حدّادون وخيميائيون الذي تضعه دار الرافدين بين يدي القارىء العربي في زمن أحوج ما نكون فيه إلى قراءة الأديان قراءة تَجمع ولا تفرّق، وتفتح الآفاق للفكر ولا تكون دعوةً للإنغلاق والبَين والتـمايـز وآملين استكمال ترجمة حفريات إلياد في اليوغا والخيمياء إلى لغة الضاد.
