رواية باب الفرج هي رواية «تعيدنا الى التاريخ القديم، ذلك أننا كلّما تقدّمنا بالسن كلّما تمنّينا العودة الى الماضي» أو كما تحدَّث عنها كاتبها سابقاً، وهو الذي توزَّعت حياته في المنفى منذ 1979 بين أماكن عدَّة، ليواصل ويقول: «عدت للوطن لأشاهد ما تغير فيه الآن». و"باب الفرج" هي رواية عن رجل دين وثلاث زوجات وحشد من البنات والأبناء في بيت واحد تعصف بهم أحداث الحروب بين احتلالين. تدور أحداث الرواية في الفترة بين نهاية الاحتلال العثماني وبداية الاحتلال البريطاني، أما مسرح الأحداث فهو مدينة النجف في الأعوام من ١٩٠٦ مع بدايات الإصلاح الديني، إلى سنوات الهزيمة عام ١٩١٤. حيث يهتز المقدس في المدينة تحت ضربات الواقع في فترة عصفت بها الحروب والكوارث، ومن الأحداث الصغيرة في بيت واحد أراد الكاتب أن يصل للأحداث الكلية ووقعها على أكثر من عشرين شخصية يجمعها مكان واحد وتفرقها أقدارها وأقدار المدينة. التاريخ يلقي ظلاله الثقيلة على الحاضر، وعلى الكاتب وهو يحلق فوق الأزمنة فيرى الماضي بعين الحاضر، ويعيد تشكيل الحاضر كمأساة ومهزلة في آن واحد. بين ذاك الماضي وهذا الحاضر يجول بنا زهير الجزائري ببراعة في هذه الرواية.
