أحد أشهر النصوص التي تتناول الإلهام التخيّلي ما ذكره عالم الكيمياء العضوية الألماني فريدريك كيكوليه في القرن التاسع عشر. إذ كرّس كيكوليه جلّ حياته في دراسة طبيعة الرابطة الكربونية وبنية البنزين. ما يحدث في العملية الإبداعية غالباً أنّ المسائل تبقى عالقة، لكنّ كيكوليه يحلّها في أحلامه حين يكون نائماً، يقول:
"كنت جالساً أعمل على كتابي، لكن العمل كان في حالة ركود، وكانت أفكاري في مكان آخر، اتكأت على الكرسي قبالة النار وغلبني النعاس ونمت، وبينما كنت أحلم، رأيت الذرات تتقافز أمام ناظري. كان حلماً متكرراً للمرّة الثانية، لكنّ هذه المرّة كانت المجموعات الأصغر تقف خجولة في الخلف. وكانت عين عقلي، التي أصبحت أكثر حدّة نتيجة الرؤى المتكررة، تستطيع أن تميّز مجموعات أكبر من التشكّلات المتعددة الآن. في بعض الأحيان، تتوافق الصفوف معاً بصورة أقرب في لفّات والتواءات في حركة شبيهة بحركة الثعابين. لكن انظر! ماذا كان ذلك؟ كان أحد الثعابين قد أمسك بذيله، ومثُلَ الشكل بهيئة مضحكة أمام ناظري. استيقظت في لمح البصر، وقضيت بقية الليل أعمل على الفرضية".
بدلاً من التفكير في الروابط الكيميائية كأنها خطوط مستقيمة، أدرك كيكوليه أن الروابط يمكن خلقها بشكل يشبه الثعبان الذي يطارد ذيله. وهكذا كانت مادة البنزين دائرة، أو ما نطلق عليها اليوم حلقة البنزين)).
