تبدأ الرواية بتمهيد يكشف صنعة الراوي العليم بشخصياته منذ اللحظات الأولى لانفلات ذلك الهارب أو انطلاقه نحو هدفه، ثم محطات مكانية تالية يقطعها ذلك الهارب الصغير حتى آخر الخط، ويصطحب الراوي والقارئ كلاهما ذلك الهارب في رحلة هروبه، يصعدان معه إلى المقطم، ويتدرجان سُلَّم مأواه المعماري حتى طابقه الرابع، ويصحبان معه (سعيد)، ويشاركانه تدوين أرقامه في سلم عدِّها التنازلي على حائطها الأسمنتي، يرافقانه في المقطم وعند الصيدلية ومحطات أخر.. حتى نهاية الخط الذي يضغط فيه الصغير بقوة قدمه على عتبة الدور الرابع في التوقيت ذاته الذي يضغط فيه أصبعه بقوة على جرس لباب يألفه...
