عندما يخسر الأب عمله في دلهي، يغادر الهند بحثًا عن عمل في أمريكا. حينها، يكون على آشا غوبتا وأختها الكبرى ريت وأمهما "ما" أن يعيشوا في منزل عمّ العائلة الكبير في كلكوتا، مع أسرته ووالدته صاحبة السلطة المطلقة. يرحب بهم العم، لكن في بيئة تقليدية جدًا ومحافظة، تضطر النساء الثلاثة إلى إطاعة أوامر أرباب العائلة دون اعتراض التزامًا للأدب وحفاظًا على السمعة، حتى لو كانت خلاف ما عاشوه مع والدهم في دلهي. تعرف آشا أن هذا الوضع الذي لا يُطاق لن يستمر، فما إن يعود والدها حتى تعود حياتها إلى ما كانت عليه من مرح وفرح. لكن مع تراكم الضغوط ومرور الوقت ونفاد المال، تعود "ما" إلى معاناتها من الامتئاب "السجان"، ويكثر خُطاب أختها ريت غير المرغوبين. لقد وعدت آشا والدها أنها ستعتني بأمها وأختها، وهذا الوعد سوف يلزمها القيامَ بأمور لا تخطر على بال. ستخوض آشا مغامرات جريئة، وستكشف أسرارًا كثيرة، ستبكي وتضحك وتتعارك، وستكتب مذكراتها مختبئة فوق سطح البيت، وستتخذ قرارات مصيرية تغير حياة الجميع.
