"لقد تحدثنا عن حالات متناقضة متنوعة في العالم، حالات خارجية كقضية اللاجئين وعذابهم وأهوال الحرب والفقر والانقسامات الوطنية والانقسامات الدينية والظلم الاقتصادي والاجتماعي، وهذه بالطبع ليست مجرّد حالات نظرية، بل حقائقَ فعليةً لما يجري في العالم من عنف وفوضى بشعة وكراهية وغيرها من أشكال الفساد.
وتجتاح هذه الفوضى البائسة عالمنا الداخلي كما الخارجي، فنحن في صراع مع أنفسنا، تعساءُ بشدّة، غير راضين عن أنفسنا، نسعى خلف المجهول، عنيفون وعدائيون، وحيدون تخنقنا المعاناة، ويبدو أنّنا عاجزون عن تحرير أنفسنا من هذه القيود، رغم سعينا الحثيث في اختبار كل أنواع علاجات السلوك والعقوبات الدينية وممارساتها، من حياة الرهبنة وحياة التضحية والإنكار والقمع والسعي المحموم الأعمى من كتاب لآخرَ، من دين لآخر ومن مُعلّم روحي لآخرَ، وانتهاء بالقيام بإصلاحات سياسية و ثورات، إلاّ أن محاولاتنا باءت بالفشل في التخلص من هذه الفوضى المقيتة سواء داخل أنفسنا أم خارجها.
تجدنا نتتّبع تعاليم أحدث معلّم روحي ممن يقدّم لنا نظاماً أو ترياقاً أو طريقةً ما تنقذنا من بؤسنا، والنتيجة هي الفشل مجدداً في حلّ أي من مشاكلنا؛ وأعتقد أنّ أي شخص عادي سيتساءل: أعلم أنّي عالقٌّ مقيّدٌ في فخ الحضارة والبؤس، في حياة ضيقة محدودة وبائسة، لقد جرّبت كلّ شيء لكن الفوضى لم تبارحني، ما الذي عليّ فعله؟ وكيف لي التحرر من هذه الحيرة والضياع؟" .
