لم يكن جهله هو ما أقلقه! فهو يعلم بما فيه الكفاية بألّا يكون جاهلاً. فقد قاده مسار حياته عبر محيطات من الجهل، حيث تقلّب من محيط إلى آخر حتى تعلم كيف يسبح، ولكن التعليم كان شيئاً جديّاً بالنسبة له. يمنح الأهل الحياة لكنهم يصلون إلى مرحلة لا يستطيعون فيها تقديم المزيد، والقاتل يقوم بسرقة الحياة وتتوقف أفعاله عند هذه المرحلة، أما تأثير المعلِّم فيدوم إلى الأبد. لا يمكنه أبداً معرفة عند أي حد سيتوقف تأثيره. يُتوقَّع من المعلم أن يقوم بتعليم الحقيقة وربما يُطرِي على نفسه بأنه يقوم بذلك، إنْ اكتفى بتعليم الأحرف الأبجدية وجدول الضرب كأم تعلم ابنها ما هو صحيح من خلال تعليم طفلها الأكل بالملعقة، لكن الأخلاق حقيقة مختلفة تماماً وتبقى الفلسفة أكثر تعقيداً. يجب على المعلّم أن يتعامل مع التاريخ إما ككتيّب أو سجل، أو كسلسلة تطوّر. وسواء كان يعترف بهذا التطور أو ينكره، فإنه سيسقط في فخ التناقضات. فهو قادر على جعل طلابه إما رهباناً أو ملحدين، رأسماليين أو اشتراكيين، قضاةً أو مجرمين، بغض النظر عن شخصيته. كون التاريخ في جوهره غير متماسك وغير أخلاقي، فإنه إما يجب أن يدرَّس على حقيقته أو أن يُزوَّر
